Beginning previews March 27, opening April 6 and playing through May 1st, The Play Company presents the American premiere of Toshiki Okada’s ENJOY, directed by Dan Rothenberg (“Chekhov Lizardbrain”) at 59E59 Theaters (59 East 59th St.) in Manhattan. Mr. Okada is widely-regarded as one of Japan’s leading contemporary theatre artists, and his play ENJOY – described as a “slacker comedy of manners” – follows the lives and romances of 20 and 30-something workers at a Tokyo manga café.  The play creates a portrait of Japanese youth culture adrift and the gathering storm of economic uncertainty in their future.  (Manga cafes are popular spots in Japan where people pay for space and time to read ‘manga’ – graphic novels – along with access to video games, television, internet and food services.)  Previously presented in Japan where Mr. Okada has his own theater company, ENJOY has been translated to English by Aya Ogawa.  ENJOY is the inaugural project in The Play Company’s Universal Voices Translation Program, which commission American translations of foreign-language plays.  For tickets to ENJOY are $35 ($5 student rush) and can be reserved by Calling Ticket Central at 212 279 4200 or ticketcentral.com
